Fallen for peace: commemorating Belgian soldiers.
Commemoration in memory of the Belgian soldiers who died in the service of peace.
Today, on April 7, we paid tribute to all the Belgian soldiers who have died in the service of peace since 1945. This happened during the traditional memorial ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Brussels.
One by one, the names of the 254 Belgian soldiers who lost their lives during humanitarian or peace operations since the end of the Second World War were read out.
To the tune of “Te Velde”, played by the Royal Navy Music Chapel, flower wreaths were laid by the King's Representative, various authorities, families and associations. With the fanning of the “eternal flame” and the signing of the Golden Book, the memory of these fallen soldiers was also revived.
On April 7, we also commemorate the ten Belgian blue helmets who were killed in Rwanda day after day in 1994, thirty years ago. At that time, the Belgian para-commandos participated in the UN peacekeeping operation “United Nations Assistance Mission for Rwanda” (UNAMIR) in Kigali. In 1998, it was therefore decided to honor all Belgian veterans every year on April 7.
So that we never forget them.
