Presentation of a report. |
The monument was unveiled on November 11, 2019, by President Emmanuel Macron. It is dedicated to French soldiers who died in military operations outside the country since 1963. It is the first national monument to perpetuate the memory of fighters who died during "external operations" (opérations extérieures, abbreviated OPEX).
The monument symbolizes the nation's gratitude and the collective memory of the soldiers who gave their lives for France far from its borders. It highlights the modern nature of military service, where participation in international missions has become the norm.
The monument is a bronze sculpture of six figures representing soldiers from different branches of the armed forces. The names of more than 600 fallen soldiers are engraved on the wall nearby.
This monument is a reminder of the price of peace and the modern face of military service, which increasingly extends beyond the borders of the home country.
